Why did DNA evolved in to chromosome?

In Uncategorized on June 16, 2013 at 10:41 pm

What is the reason for the DNA to be organised as chromosomes? In earliest(in evolutionary terms) and simplest organisms, DNA is is found as one unit. But higher in evolutionary ladder, the DNA gets organized in to multiple units(i.e. chromosomes). So what is the reason behind this.
Is it
– due to the physical properties of long chain molecules?
– organised according to the functions of the part of DNA (modules?)? (for e.g. each chromosome is associated with a particular organ system( reproductive, audio visual, respiratory, digestive..)
– just random?
Is there a direct correlation between number of chromosomes and evolutionary advancement(chronological)?
